In this day and age, being a good communicator is a valuable skill to have. Parents, it is important to teach your kids how to communicate to others. The best way to do this? Talk to people. Have them talk to friends, strangers (While being supervised), people at church, cashiers, coaches, new kids their age, etc. This will help them develop communication skills that will be valuable for years to come.
Parents and players; be able to communicate with each other. Parents; Make sure that your kid wants to play basketball before forcing them into something that they may not want to do. One thing that I love to do is make sure both the parents and the players are both well informed about what we are trying to accomplish with the training that we are doing. I like to have both the players and parents come up with goals together. Write them down. Put them on the fridge at home or the bulletin board. These goals can be weekly goals or monthly goals about what the players want to get out of the training. Maybe you want to complete a certain amount of videos each week. Or maybe you want to stay an extra 15 minutes each day. Or maybe you want to set a new personal best time for a dribbling drill. Whatever it may be, take the time to write down your goals.
Next, parents; be encouraging. Encourage your kids to work their best each and every day. An encouraging word does wonders for lifting a player’s spirit. Your kids will look to you for approval and your encouragement. What you say to them matters, even if it is the smallest word.
Lastly, make sure your kid knows that you love them, no matter what. Let them know that regardless if they score 30 points or 0 points, you will love them regardless. All you want them to do is become the best versions of themselves, but their performance on the court will not determine your love for them. This can be one of the most powerful things that a kid can hear while playing basketball.
I have seen all of these things happen first hand and communication is the main key!
If a household has communication, there will be a higher chance for success.
God Bless,
Coach Connor
